35,000 times

“Life is a series of choices”, which is one of the adages by William Shakespeare.

It seems that we make up to 35,000 times decisions a single day, according to a study by Barbara Sahakian in Cambridge University. It is such an incredible the number of times. At the same time, I guess that “35,000” would not ring a bell for you guys.

Let me give you some examples:

What to eat for lunch.

What to say to colleagues.

What time you leave home, etc.

It goes without saying that there are a lot of options you need to choose not only very light things, but also difficult ones, conscious ones, and unconscious ones.

You should be tired by tons of decision-makings, so now is the time to reduce the number of times! I hope you can find a better solution to reduce decision-making times through the workshop.

Here are exercise and questions below.

<Exercise>

It is said that people make 35,000 decisions a day.

What kind of decision do you usually make a day? Please share

<Questions>

What are your difficult decisions you have make in your life? Please share your experience and a reason why it was tough. (5 minutes)

What are your criteria when you make a decision / choose an option? It would be depending on topics, so please share your idea whatever you want.

e.g.) money, time, others’ opinions, self-approval

If you reduce the number of decision-making times, you can save some time and could be less tired. What could be done in order for you to get the number of times lower?

≪LATTER HALF≫

<Agenda>

Future of Monarchy

Queen Elizabeth II, the second-longest reigning monarch in world history passed away on September 8th at the age of 96.

Many monarchs from other countries attended the Queen’s funeral. Among them, the Danish queen Margrethe, now the longest-serving monarch in the world, was also present to mourn her longtime friend. On September 30th, queen Margrethe announced to remove the titles of “Princess” and “Prince” from her grandchildren belonging to her second son, Prince Joachim. As the world has changed to pursue more impartiality and equality compared to the past, reducing the numbers of the working royals and slimming down the royal family is a discussion item for all the monarchies around the world including the United Kingdom.

Monarchy can be categorized as absolute monarchy, constitutional monarchy, and semi-constitutional monarchy. While absolute monarchy centralizes the power to the monarchs, monarchs of the constitutional monarchy exist as a representative function. In countries with semi-constitutional monarchies, monarchs and elected representatives share powers for country governance. The importance of the monarchy may differ among countries depending on the roles and responsibilities of the monarchy in each country, however, who will define and decide whether the monarchy is “important”?

<Questions>

1. What is the “ideal” monarchy? If you were to be a monarch, which type of monarchy would you choose? How do you define your role as a monarch?

2. Being a royal family member is not easy. Royal family members have been the center of attention and the media chase after the family members infringing their privacies. In addition, royal children have to take over their duties from birth without consent. Some argue that lack of freedom and privacy is a violation of human rights. Should the royal family members endure the current situation as they live on national tax incomes?

3. Do you think Japan needs monarchy in the future? Why and why not? Please share your discussion results in the end.
