Dynamic pricing
Many things are going up prices this year. One of the things is theme park tickets.
I recently purchased Universal Studios Japan’s weekend ticket. It costs 10,400yen, even though it costs 8,600yen for weekdays. This type of setting price is called “dynamic pricing “.
Dynamic pricing is a pricing strategy that charges customers different prices for the same good or service based on fluctuations in market demand. Businesses using dynamic pricing change their prices in real time, according to changes in supply and demand. Dynamic pricing is a common practice in several industries such as flight, hotels, entertainment and gas. Companies introduce dynamic pricing not only profiting but also, controlling demand. For example, JR East introduced “off-peak commuter passes” in order to control crowds by giving discounts for users who avoid rush hour.
The idea of dynamic pricing sounds good but it is not always successful. Hotels offered rooms at higher prices than usual for a busy weekend. Those hotels got good revenue, but they also got negative reputations, such as “not worth the price”. If the price of services is not affordable, existing customers could leave. Let me know your opinion towards dynamic pricing.
<Questions>
Q1. Please enumerate other examples of dynamic pricing.
Q2. Have you ever changed your actions because of dynamic pricing? Why or why not?
Q3. Do you agree with introducing dynamic pricing for social infrastructure such as public transportation, electricity, and gas? Please explain the reasons.
Q4. Should popular tourist sites (e.g. Kiyomizu-temple, Osaka castle, and Mt.Fuji) introduce dynamic pricing for crowd controlling?
If yes, how should these places set the price? If not, what is the reason?
