Learning Strategies and Motivation

Keeping motivation for learning English is always my biggest concern. Although I enjoy learning it, there are times when I feel less motivated. According to a book called “成長する英語学習者”, the motivation for learning a foreign language is unstable and consists of many factors, such as the learner’s ideal image, the level of interest in the target language, and willingness to communicate, etc. It is considered that the use of following learning strategies could influence the motivation.

Metacognitive strategy: Method that learners use to monitor and control their own learning process, such as setting goals, planning, monitoring comprehension, evaluating progress, and adjusting.(e.g. Having a specific goal can lead to higher motivation)

Affective strategy: Method that learners use to manage their emotions and attitudes toward learning, including maintaining a positive attitude, managing anxiety, and building confidence.

Social strategy: Method that learners use to engage with others and leverage social interactions to enhance their learning process, such as teaching/asking questions to other learners, and participating in E’s club.(e.g. Peer pressure works well in terms of keeping motivation)

I have seen many people who are highly motivated to learn English since I joined E’s club. So, I am curious to know which strategies you use the most and what exactly influences your motivation.

(For instance, some people might believe that immersing themselves in an English-speaking country is effective for maintaining higher motivation because using English is unavoidable in such an environment.)

Osaka weighs ‘entry fee’ for foreign tourists in bid to combat overtourism

The Osaka Prefectural Government will consider charging foreign tourists staying in the prefecture an “entry fee” to combat over tourism, Gov. Hirofumi Yoshimura said Wednesday.

The planned levy is separate from the lodging tax already in place for both domestic and international tourists, and will be used to fund measures against overtourism and keep the streets clean.

If introduced, it would be the first levy of its kind nationwide. The goal is to introduce it in time for the Osaka-Kansai, Japan Expo that starts in April 2025, Yoshimura said.
