Lessons from Sports and Giving Back to Society

Sports have always been more than just a form of entertainment or a way to stay fit. They are a powerful tool for personal development and better society. Through sports, individuals acquire invaluable life skills and gain experiences that shape their character, discipline, teamwork abilities, and more. Professional athletes, throughout their careers, learn significant lessons from their fans, teammates, and competitors. Many of these athletes put substantial efforts into giving back to society or community after their retirements.

One notable example is Harumafuji Kohei, 70th yokozuna sumo wrestler. Arriving in Japan from Mongolia in 2000 at the age of 16, he began his sumo career at Ajigawa stable. Until his retirement in 2017, he gained life lessons through rigorous training under his Oyakata, living together with other sumo wrestlers, and competing with rivals. During Harumafuji’s professional life, becoming stronger than fellow wrestlers (Ani-deshi) and winning competitions was his way of giving back or “on-gaeshi”. Becoming a yokozuna was a significant on-gaeshi to his Oyakata. After retirement, Harumafuji focused on giving back to society. He has contributed to education in Mongolia by building schools, demonstrating his commitment to his homeland’s future.

Many athletes also engage in social contribution activities after finishing their professional careers. However, giving back to society is not something that only top athletes can do. How can we, as individuals, contribute to our communities? We can start by applying the lessons we learned from sports or club activities—teamwork, discipline, perseverance, leadership, and humility—in our daily lives. We can volunteer, mentor young people, or support local initiatives. Everyone has the potential to make a positive impact, regardless of their status or background. By taking small, meaningful actions, we can all contribute to a better society.

<Questions>

Share a specific example of an athlete who has engaged in social contribution activities.

How do the values and skills learned through sports or club activities, such as teamwork, discipline, perseverance, and leadership, influence other areas of life? It would be preferable if you could share your own experience.

In what ways can individuals give back to their communities or society? Discuss specific actions or initiatives.

Some people insist that social contribution activities by retired athletes are for self-advertisements for their second careers. In the first place, do professional athletes have responsibilities to work on social contribution activities? Why or why not? Please be prepared for sharing your group’s opinion at the end of the workshop.
