What is Occupational therapy?

Have you heard of “Occupational therapy” before? If you haven’t yet, it would be a good chance to know about occupational therapy!

I am an occupational therapist. Occupational therapist is called in Japanese, 作業療法士, also known as リハビリの先生.

In general, “Rehabilitation” is common word more than “Occupational therapy” in Japan, so today, I will take you on the tour of our field of occupational therapy!

…Are you ready?

Occupational therapy is one of rehabilitation, and there are three national licensed therapists: Physical therapist, Speech therapist and Occupational therapist. These threes have same goals that the clients recover as much as possible and feel better, ease and happy.

Mainly physical therapy focuses on the ability of legs, feet and function of heart and lungs. So basically physical therapy is in charge of basic body functions, like standing up, walking and physical fitness.

Speech therapy focuses on ability of speech, including function of mouth, tongue and brain area of speaking. Also, they are the specialists for the function of swallowing (means eating and drinking), it’s really important to live, exactly.

Finally, occupational therapy focuses on fundamental daily activities, such as washing face, changing clothes, brushing teeth, eating, using toilet, taking shower or bath, making up, shaving mustache etc. Also, related all daily activities, like shopping at a grocery store, paying money, cooking, taking public transportations, and practicing some specific situations at work or school, and so on. Occupational therapy is for all ages and who have difficulties or disabilities with physically and mentally.

I attached website of what is occupational therapy below in this article, so please check it out (It’s in Japanese).

I will tell you more details of occupational therapy in the real practice settings on the day of E’s club.

Before wrap up, I would love to share my policy of occupational therapy.

1, Having a fun time during my therapy session

2, Making my clients feel comfortable, happy and confident.

3, Facing my client as A PERSON, not focus on diseases.

=======================

Here are the questions, I would like to hear your thoughts about question 2 or 3.

<Questions>

Question 1:

Have you heard of occupational therapy?

If you say “yes”, how did you know?

Or, if you say “no”, please share your impressions of occupational therapy through this session.

Question 2:

Have you had positive or negative impressions or experiences in medical settings? Please share your impressions or experiences about it.

Question 3:

What are the important things for you if you need to take rehabilitation therapy? Please share your opinion and reasons why.

Sample answers:

Example 1,

I want fun and friendly therapy sessions because it will be easy to talk anything to my therapists without hesitation. Friendly therapists make me feel relaxed.

Example 2,

I prefer serious therapy sessions and seeking goals strictly because it is important to recover as soon as possible, so I want my therapist as professions, not like friends.

Example 3,

I definitely need kind and mild therapy programs because I am filled with anxiety, so I want my therapists who are good listeners.

Sustainable fashion

The fashion industry is the second most polluting industry in the world. Not only does the fashion industry has environmental problems, but also it has issues of childhood labor and low wedge labor.

The problem of the fashion industry concerns all people, no matter if you are a fashion enthusiast or not unless you are naked.

Sustainable fashion (also known as eco-fashion) is a movement and process of fostering change for fashion products and the fashion system towards greater ecological integrity and social justice.

The movement of sustainable fashion is definitely important. However, most people might just want to enjoy trendy outfits on a budget. We should find an easy and acceptable way to enjoy fashion sustainably.

Here are some ideas of sustainable fashion. I hope you are interested in even one of these ideas.

The first idea is most simple: choosing clothes that will last.

The second idea is renting clothes instead of buying them. I have used fashion subscription services in order to enjoy trendy outfits.

The third idea is buying and selling clothes at second-hand stores. Finding clothes at a thrift shop is like a treasure hunt and it is really amusing for me. The Speaker of the TED Talk video told us how fun adopting second-hand clothes into our life.  (Jessi Arrington: Wearing nothing new | TED Talk)

The problem of the fashion industry seems too massive for each consumer to take care of. However, I think we just need to care more about the process of producing, selling, and letting go of their clothes as best as we can. In the discussion, let’s talk about what we can do for sustainable fashion as a consumer.

<Questions>

1. What factors do you consider while purchasing clothes?

2. What do you consider when you let go of your clothes?

3. As a consumer, how can you involve in the sustainable fashion movement?  Please share your opinion at the end of the discussion.

<Optional question>

4. Have you ever bought second-hand clothes or sold your clothes for resellers? If yes, please share the pros and cons of the experience. If not, please share the reason why you haven’t.
