What is the greatest technology or invention that changed your life?

It is quite easy to understand that new gadgets and technologies have made our daily life convenient than the past. The talk by futurist Juan Enriquez is interesting as technological advancements have also changed common sense and social norms of society. In his talk, he gives the example of the industrial revolution which transferred the dangerous and heavy labor from human beings to machines. Before the industrial revolution, no one questioned the labor-intensive industries that used human beings as cheap and replaceable resources to pursuit profit. He also looks into the future. Recently, synthetic meat technology has advanced enough to meet the market needs. If synthetic meat shall be accepted and become more common among consumers, the meat-eating tradition may vanish or become a minority in the future.  I assume that these kinds of changes are happening also during your personal life.

Should we learn English?

Studying language is considered as one of the most practical ways to make use of your spare time nowadays. If you are fluent in English, there are a number of benefits. For example, you would be headhunted by a company.

However, AI translation system is developing day by day. Many people start to say “there is no need to study English because of the AI translation. I think that AI is smarter than me. ” Unfortunately, it is difficult to disagree with this opinion completely thanks to the development of the AI system.

But I know there is a virtue in studying English. I strongly believe that there is an advantage which you cannot obtain without studying English. What do you think? If children in the future ask you “Should we learn English? I want to use AI translation!”. How would you answer?

If not, why do you think that?
