Women in management positions

How many women are in management positions in your company? Have some female employees recently become a manager or been in the similar position in the company you work?

Teikoku Databank conducted a survey regarding the number of female managers at Japanese companies. The survey showed that an average of 8.9% of managers at Japanese companies are women. Teikoku asked for information from over 24,000 companies, and almost 11,000 replied. Last year in 2020, the survey showed only 7.8% of bosses in Japan are female. The result in 2021 showed an increase from 2020, but only by 1.1%.

In 2003, the Japanese government set a goal of 30% of management positions to be occupied by women by the year 2020. Unfortunately, the goal has not been reached while the government has been trying to raise the numbers by implementing policies such as “Act on the Promotion of Female Participation and Career Advancement in the Workplace”1), which is enforced in 2016.

Looking at the situation in other counties, the percentage of women in management positions worldwide averaged 27.1% in 2018 according to a report concerning women’s work released by the International Labor Organization (IL0). Japan’s rate is by far the lowest among the G7 countries. Actually, Japan’s rate is close to 11.1% of Arab countries, where women are said to lag behind in social advancement.

What factors have made this kind of situation in Japan? Today, I would like to have a thorough discussion on the issues that the Japanese government is tackling.
