Can “Food-tech” change our eating habits?

Can you imagine a scene that we eat lab-grown meat in the near future? Can you believe that meat can be made with 3D printer? Can you guess that plant-based burger is going to be common in a burger restaurant in Japan?

“Food-tech” is one of the trendy words in the food industry. “Food-tech” means an ecosystem made of all the agri-food entrepreneurs and startups (from production to distribution) innovating on the products, distribution, marketing, or business model 1).

Above all, a lot of startup companies are trying to produce meat alternative foods with novel proteins and innovative technology. For instance, Nissin food holdings is working on creating and launching a lab-grown meat with University of Tokyo. They are aiming to make a meat chunk (Thickness 2cm× Length 7cm) by 2025. Another example is meat made by 3D printer. “Refined meat”, which is an Israel-based startup company, plans to ramp up the production of 3D meat printers and alternative meat formulations ahead of market distribution in 2021. On top of that, “Beyond meat”, which is U.S-based company, produces plant-based meat pate made from mainly pea protein. They have contracted with “McDonald’s” and “Yum! Brands”, and are going to supply their pate to the two giant fast-food restaurant chains.

By the way, why are many companies tackling producing meat alternative? One of the reasons is related to the environment. It is said that producing meats consume water, use land and emit greenhouse gas. By replacing beef with plant-based meat, these consumptions decrease by 99%, 93%, and 90% respectively. Also, the world population increase is one of the main reasons for that. We are expected to reach 10 billion people by 2050, resulting in a 70% increase in the demand for food production. Above all, “protein” is one of the essential food sources. It is also said that balance between protein demand and supply will be likely to collapse in 2030. Under the situation, a new protein source should be one of the solutions for the issue.

The meat alternative market in Japan is still small. Therefore, you might not familiar with these topics. Through the session, I would be grateful if you could touch on the “food-tech” world and be interested in it.

Today’s questions

1)       Would you like to eat “lab-grown meat” and “3D printer meat” if these were commercially available in the future? Why or why not?

2)       Would you like to proactively eat plant-based meat such as beyond meat instead of real meat in restaurants or at home? Why or why not?

3)       Why is the meat alternative market in Japan still small compared with western countries?

Do you think that the market is likely to grow in Japan in the future? Why or why not?

4)       Why are Japanese people not interested in social issues such as global warming? What can be done to make people be interested in those issues?

In Western countries, not a few people change their habit by being influenced by social issues. Whereas, Japanese people seem not to be influenced by them.
