Various Transportation Methods in Your City

 There are many different types of transportation and the types used in an area are based on the location, the size of the area and the size of the population they are required to serve. For example, if the area is surrounded by water then boats would be a main factor. If the area is congested then underground trains would be required.

 A lot of planning is required to put in place the best type of transportation based on needs of the area. In order to determine this, there are usually many studies done to make sure the best possible decision is made. These studies have to look not only at the present needs but also they must take into consideration the projected growth rate for the area.

  Another consideration for determining the proper type of transportation would be the types of industry and businesses that are in place or are planned for the area. They also have to study how the area will connect with other areas that are remote from it and how far away they are. Will it be a shipping port for goods and people and does it require an airport and what size would it have to be? With this knowledge they can plan for cars, taxis, buses, trains, boats and planes to meet the required needs .

<Questions>

1. How do you commute to work? Please explain the reason for choosing it.

2. Do you think that the transportation in your city is suitable for your city’s needs? Please emulate the reason.

3. How do you think the transportation system in your city could be improved?

≪LATTER HALF≫

Philosophy café @E’s club

Do you like talking about philosophical issues? If you like philosophical discussions, “Philosophy café” would be a suitable place for you. Philosophy café or Café philosophique is a grassroots forum for philosophical discussion founded by a French philosopher Marc Sautet in 1992. The subjects discussed at philosophy café range from the Santa Claus myth to truth to beauty to sex to death. Anyone can join without special knowledge and people can discuss philosophical topics. The idea of Sautet’s philosophy cafés has spread around the world. There are many philosophy café groups all over Japan too.

Philosophy café is not a place to reach agreement, but enjoy having conversations about philosophical questions. The topics of philosophy café are simple but fundamental questions related to your life, beliefs, values, and etc. One of the typical questions is “what is the meaning of your life?”.

There are no specific rules of philosophy café, but there are some basic rules as follows. All participants are equal, there are no teachers or students. You can say anything but respect each other and do not deny personality. Do not use technical words, but speak based on your experience or belief. Listen until the speaker finishes talking. Do not force participants speaking.

Let’s try philosophy café this time at E’s club. The topic is about “freedom”. Freedom is a major theme of philosophy which has been discussed from old times. Here are the guiding questions. You can start answering these questions if it’s difficult to start the discussion.

<Guiding questions>

1. Do you feel free in daily life? If so, why? If not, please explain what constrains you.

2. What kind of freedom do you need? And how can you achieve it?

3. What does “freedom” mean to you.?

Please share the summary of opinions in your group at the end. (No specific questions to be answered.)
