Cult and a New Religion

Recently the word “Cult” has suddenly become popular in major media and on SNS too.

Many people discuss the issues of relationships between politicians and religious groups.

The original meaning of “Cult” is religious activities and religious festivals, but now mostly used as the meaning “an extreme religious group that is not part of an established religion (Longman)”.

On the other hand, 4 major religions are considered Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism.

Now they have a huge volume of followers, and sometimes they may also have extreme followers, however, they are not considered a cult.

By the way, Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism started like a “cult” originally, cause they are also separated from a conventional religious group.

There is another word “sect” mainly used in France, which means the New Religious group separated from conventional religious group.

Usually, Cult groups are mainly considered as established as “Sect”.

I am wondering what is the difference between conventional groups, and new religious groups, what makes people so extreme, and also to think about the proper way of living together with them.

<Question>

1. Have you ever been invited to the mass, workshops, and so on by new religious groups?

2. Some religious groups are more aggressive to invite new members into their society, compared to conventional groups.

 Why are they so active and what is the purpose?

3. Please discuss the proper position and cooperate with them to live together in society.

Digital life after your death

Have you ever heard of the term “デジタル終活(digital end-of-life)”?

In the past, books, photos, bank accounts, and New Year’s cards all existed in physical form. So if you died, your relatives could find all of your personal information, that might include your friendship. And they could organize your information and money.

But now, almost all of that information is on your smartphone and PC.

Then, after your death, subscriptions to video sites (e.g., Netflix) may continue to be used. Or SNS account may be hacked by someone you don’t know.

Come to think of it, we don’t know who will inherit and own the photos and other information on SNS or on the Internet after the person’s death.

Let’s think about your “digital assets” after you are gone.

<Question>

1. Have you ever heard of the term “デジタル終活(digital end-of-life)”? What do you think about that word and activity?

2. What do you think you need to do for your own digital life, including money information like a bank account? Also, is there any information you do not want people to see? How do you want your digital assets to be handled after your death?

3. We often see news about famous people being recreated by computer graphics. For example, Hibari Misora. How do you feel about this from an ethical and moral point of view? Please imagine that you or your relatives were recreated by CG.

4. With new technologies such as the Metaverse, personal information on the Internet should continue to expand. Please think about and discuss what will happen in the future with regard to digital end-of-life care.
