 Formula of happiness (“positive psychology”)

Are you a happy person? Are you satisfied with your life? Among the 154 countries listed in the annual word happiness report, Japan is ranked in the 54th place. We could not easily conclude that underestimating the value of one’s life directly means “unhappiness”, however, Japan is one of the countries with the lowest life evaluation index among the high-income countries. As many low-income countries rank higher than Japan, it seems that money is not the superior component to guarantee happiness.

How do you define happiness and what makes a “happy” person? Researchers in Psychology have been investigating this question. In the past decades, the field of Psychology has broadened its interest from merely diagnosing and treating people with mental disorders into a “normal” state, but also improving normal lives to enhance positive mindset and well-being.

Martin Seligman established the field of “positive psychology” by collecting the determinants of happiness through a number of interviews to “happy” people.

Seligman categorized happy lives into three categories. First of all, “pleasant life” is a life filled with various amusements that entertain the soul to become continuously happy. Second is “good life”, in which life is content by deep engagements to activities and human relationships. Lastly, “a meaningful life” is to use one’s strengths to serve for something larger than an individual. Through research, Seligman identified that engagements and meaningful life had a correlation with life satisfaction, but pleasures rarely do. How do you think about this result?

<Questions>

1. What is your definition of “happiness”? Based on your definition, what is the score of your current life now?

2. Research concluded that “engagement to activities and/or relationships” and “have meaning in life” are important factors for life satisfaction. Do you agree with this conclusion? Either yes or no, why do you think so?

3. <Activity> According to the study conducted by Seligman, the positive feeling caused by doing something altruistic (philanthropy) lasts longer than doing something only fun. For three days, do something nice to other people at least once a day. Please share in groups, whether it made a difference to your mentality. *SHARE at the rap-up time
