≪LATTER HALF≫

<Agenda>”Todai Robot Project

Have you heard about the University of Tokyo Robot Project, so called Torobo-kun?

It is the name of artificial intelligence that is being researched and developed in the project “Do robots enter the University of Tokyo?”, which has been conducted since 2011 by the National Institute of Informatics ((Research Organization of Information and Systems)) in Japan.

*** About Torobo-kun Project ***

The goal was to acquire the ability to pass the University of Tokyo in 2021.

In the Shinken mock exam in June 2015, the grade was improved to the deviation value(偏差値) 57.8.

However, there is a problem with the reading comprehension required to pass the University of Tokyo, and the current AI theory of statistical learning using big data and deep learning cannot improve the grade any more.

Unless there is some breakthrough, it is judged that the University of Tokyo cannot pass, and Torobo-kun development had been frozen.

*** Problem about AI ***

In the process of developing Torobo-kun, the current AI issues were revealed.

The current AI has a huge amount of knowledge through search, but the reading comprehension of sentences is fatally insufficient. In other words, AI cannot understand the meaning.

-> Will AI destroy humanity now? … AI won’t destroy it!

-> The singularity is coming? … It isn’t coming!

singularity: The point where artificial intelligence becomes smarter than human beings, and the point where more advanced artificial intelligence reaches the cycle of producing better artificial intelligence

*** Problem about humanity ***

In spite of the fact that Torobo-kun has a fatal lack of reading comprehension, it achieved a decent grade of “MARCH pass level”, which is in the top 20% of all 500,000 examinees.

It means that the reading comprehension of Japanese high school students is in crisis.

*** Discussion topics ***

* AI VS. Humans as working force

AI has strengths and weaknesses, and AI is not going to take over all the human jobs but some.

* About Reading comprehension

Humans need to improve their reading comprehension, which AI is not good at. But it has become clear that it is currently lacking.

Arai-san says she has decided to take it seriously, “How can we provide a bright future for 80% of the children who lost to Torobo-kun?”

<Questions>

3.

About reading comprehension,

Do you think it is necessary to change education at school in the future? And how?
