＜Agenda＞“Subscription services?” 

Due to the recent pandemic of covid-19, many people are spending more time staying at home compared to before.

As people are not willing to go outside to play, many are trying to find new hobbies so that they can enjoy at home, such as cooking and gardening, etc.

Some of the most popular indoor hobbies are reading books, listening to music, and watching movies, and it seems that many people are spending more time enjoying them at home this year.

In the past, some people had the stereotype that we should go to theaters to enjoy watching movies, and we should buy CDs to enjoy music. In recent years, however, a lot of people have been enjoying movies and music online. There are many services such as Netflix, Spotify, and Amazon, which offer “subscription services” for movies and music. They are very popular among people nowadays.

A subscription service allows you to use products and services during a certain period when you pay a fee.

Many people misunderstand the term “subscription service” as “unlimited use” since Netflix, Spotify, and Amazon have offered unlimited access to movies and music, giving the impression that “subscription services are unlimited”. Actually, the subscription service doesn’t mean “a system of unlimited use” but “a system of regular purchase”.

When you hear the term “subscription service”, which products or services does it remind you of? Books, music, and movies are the most well-known services, but recently, there are many subscription services in other fields. For example, consumer electronics, clothing, and cars have become popular as well.

It sounds like a new service since it has been in the news a lot lately, but it is the business model that has been used for a long time like “newspapers” and “milk deliveries”.

As I mentioned above, subscription services are expanding in many fields and many popular services are easily used, but why is the number of users increasing so much?

Today, I want you to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this service.

1. What are the best subscription services you’ve ever used?  

2. Enumerate the advantages and disadvantages of the subscription service.

3. If you were to launch a subscription service, what kind of service would you want to offer?

4. What products or services are not suitable for subscriptions? Why is that?  (Optional question)
