<Agenda>What abilities or skills are required in your occupation?

I’ve been a high school teacher since I graduated from my university.  When I was a high school student, teachers focused mainly on teaching knowledge. Students were supposed to have skills to memorize and solve questions in textbooks. However, these days, teachers are required to organize their lessons not only with teaching knowledge but also with activities such as doing group works, researching, and making presentations. For example, English lessons have changed from traditional grammar-translation techniques to more communicative methodologies. After students read a story and understand vocabulary and grammar, they will make presentations so that they can use the vocabulary and grammar they have learned. Through these lessons, students acquire skills to cooperate with classmates, to connect the knowledge in the textbook to their real life, or to think critically and creatively.

Today, as a teacher, who takes a role to cultivate students’ skills for their future, I want to know what skills are needed in the real society and why those skills are important.

1. What abilities or skills did you acquire when you were a high school student? How did you acquire them?

2. Are the abilities or skills you mentioned above still useful? Why do you think they are useful or not useful?

3. What abilities or skills are important in your occupation? Why? How did you acquire them?

4. Do you think high schools should spend more time cultivating abilities or skills which are required in society?

In my case, when I was a high school student, I acquired an ability to continue to do something to the end. I acquired this ability by studying for entrance examinations. Also, I acquired the basic skills of studying, reading books, or listening to others to understand new things. Thanks to them, I will never give up and continue to solve problems even when I face a really difficult situation. Also, the basic skills of studying are useful when I want to learn new things to brush up my skills.

In addition to these abilities, I acquired many skills after I started working. One of them is a management skill. Management skill includes setting goals, planning how to achieve the goals, sharing them with students, carrying out the plan, and convincing students.

Setting goals requires understanding and accepting different situations. I must understand the current situation of students. If I ignored the current levels of students and set the goal too low or too high, they won’t follow me. I learned this from my experience as a teacher.

Planning requires thinking logically and critically. I must imagine how students react and what changes happen after taking the plan.

Sharing and requires making my ideas into words. Making myself understood requires speech techniques such as telling a story chronologically or using examples. I learned the technique through practicing debate.

Convincing requires observing the current situation and setting small goals depending on the situation.

I don’t think I can cultivate all of these abilities and skills but I believe I can cultivate some of them. So I will be happy if I can get new ideas to teach students through today’s discussion.
