＜Agenda＞ Why do we bother for fashion?

*There is a DRESS CODE for this workshop. Read Q1 and enjoy preparation!

After a state of emergency was announced by the government, many of you may have been forced to work or take classes from home. In order to substitute face-to-face meetings, companies and schools introduced web meeting systems to gather people online. Some of the people embarrassed themselves by forgetting to turn off the mics or cameras during web meetings. Some people were not dressed properly and unintentionally showed their relaxed own nature to their peers. I myself became quite lazy about fashion and became indifferent about my appearance. I realized that I was dressed mostly for other people, and not for myself. So, why do we have to dress properly? Every society has some kind of sartorial standards and obedience to the dress code is a way to blend in. However, some say that fashion is a tool to express yourself. Do you think that sartorial standards put restraints on people’s uniqueness?

  1. One of the interesting features of the Japanese job market is that all the job seekers (especially students) wear black suits. Some companies require students to wear something different for the job interview to understand the applicants’ personalities from a different perspective.

IMAGINE YOU ARE A JOB SEEKER. YOU ARE ASKED TO WEAR CLOTHES THAT WOULD “REPRESENT YOUR UNIQUENESS MOST”. WEAR THEM FOR THE ZOOM WORKSHOP. Show your outfits to your group members and explain your reason for choice. For fashion lovers, what is your passion for fashion? For non-fashion lovers, what are your principles in choosing clothes? Please make a 1minute presentation why you chose today’s clothes.

  1. From the group work in Q1, do you think requesting students to wear their preferred outfits enables the job hunters to gain new insight into the applicants’ personality? Please share your opinion and reasons.
  2. Every season, the fashion industry proposes a set of trends. Talking about colors, the International Commission For Color selects a set of trend colors and shares them with the fashion and design industries (http://www.intercolor.nu/). This forecast is created two years prior to the respective season. Thus, we could say that consumers are driven to chase this artificially created fashion trend every season. If you don’t have to care what others think, do you dress differently from the trend? What are the pros- and cons- of fashion trends?
