≪FIRST HALF≫
Speak with Purpose -From speaking more to speaking with meaning-
When it comes to improving speaking skills, many people focus on quantity — speaking more and increasing output. However, I think that quality is more important.
When I was new to this club, I tried to speak as much as possible in discussions to improve and attended many social gatherings after sessions to share learning methods with other members.
Through these experiences, I realised something important: our speaking skills improve more effectively when we have someone we want to talk to and something we want to talk about.
For example, as I became friends with other members, I found myself wanting to talk with them more to get to know them better. I also felt a strong desire to express my thoughts when I took on the role of topic organiser because I always choose something I care about. Because of that, I started to pay more attention to my expressions and tried to make my ideas clearer.
Moreover, I enjoy discussing topics provided by other members since they always broaden my knowledge. Therefore, I’ve come to believe that creating more moments when we actually want to speak and having meaningful discussions are more crucial to improving our speaking skills than simply increasing output.
In this session, I’d like us to discuss how we can create opportunities to speak with more purpose in E’s club.

What kind of preparation might make discussions more engaging?
*Don’t worry too much about whether your ideas are realistic.
For example:
・participating more actively by taking on roles such as a recorder or a topic organiser?
・making groups smaller to make us feel more comfortable speaking?
・asking clarifying questions to understand others’ ideas better?etc.
