The Courage to Be Disliked and Defying Gravity

I recently read The Courage to Be Disliked (嫌われる勇気), a book about achieving true happiness and self-worth based on the theories of Alfred Adler. One of the key ideas in the book is that we should not seek approval. This is because relying too much on evaluations from others or trying to meet their expectations can cause our sense of worth to be influenced by their feedback.

Interestingly, I realized that the main character of my favourite musical, Wicked, seems to follow a similar path (without having read this book, of course!). At first, Elphaba, the main character, tried hard to meet others’ expectations in order to be loved and accepted. However, after a pivotal event, her perspective changed, and she realized that letting go of her need for approval would lead to greater freedom and happiness.

This connection between Adler’s theories and Wicked made me reflect on how we perceive our happiness and self-worth. I also wonder if Adler’s theories are truly helpful in real-life situations.

I hope this session will give you a chance to think about your true happiness and self-worth.

<Questions>

1. What is something you have accomplished that made you feel proud of yourself recently?

2. Think back to a time when you felt happy because others appreciated, accepted, or praised you. What was it about that moment that made you happy?

3. What can you do to boost your self-esteem? What can you do to maintain your sense of worth even when you receive negative feedback from others?

4. What do you do if others’ expectations or social expectations of you differ from what you want to be or do?
For example, what would you do if you strongly disagreed with your company’s policies or rules, but would be acclaimed by people around you if you followed them? How would you stay true to yourself in such a situation?

≪LATTER HALF≫

What motivates you at work?

Changing jobs has become common in recent years, and finding a job that suits you has become increasingly important. Fortunately, I am satisfied with my current job to a certain degree. What I value about my job is the autonomy I have. Being able to plan my own schedule and decide how to approach my tasks has a significant impact on my motivation. Have you ever noticed that you feel more motivated when you can make your own decisions? This is the idea behind self-determination theory.

What is self-determination theory? Self-determination theory explains that people feel more motivated when they believe that their actions can change the outcome. It says that people become more self-motivated when three basic psychological needs are fulfilled:

1.     Autonomy – People need to feel in control of their own actions and goals. When they believe they can make real changes, they feel more motivated.

2.     Competence – People need to learn new skills and feel confident in their abilities. When they believe they can succeed, they take action to reach their goals.

3.     Connection (Relatedness) – People need to feel a sense of belonging and connection with others.

Self-determination can play an important role in how people function in many different areas of their lives. Feeling in control and intrinsically motivated can help people feel more committed, passionate, interested, and satisfied with the things that they do.

<Questions>

1.     Are you satisfied with your current job? Why or why not?

2.     When does your motivation to work decrease? How do you deal with it?

3.     What is the most important factor that motivates you at work?

Please be prepared to share a summary of your discussion on Q.3.
