Thinking of the earthquake

Do you know or remember what occurred on January 17 of 1995?
Hanshin Awaji big earthquake occurred and due to this big earthquake, over 6000 people died. 25 years have passed, but when January 17 comes every year, I remember this big and serious earthquake.

Actually, I and my family were victims. After the earthquake occurred, we couldn’t spend usual lives for a while. Electricity, water supply and other lifelines couldn’t be functioned and we couldn’t stay in our house, so we had to sleep in our family car every night.

Due to this experience, I think earthquake is the most terrible thing in the world because it took not only many people’s lives in an instant, but also our usual daily lives. So I want to let you know the fear of earthquake and want you to think of earthquake deeply. That’s why I choose this topic and prepare four questions today.

<QUESTION>1.     Have you ever experienced that kind of big earthquake actually? If so, please let us know your experience in detail after the earthquake occurred.
(For example, how did you feel, how did you spend time after the earthquake and so on.)
2.  Do you do anything in your daily lives to take precautions against an earthquake?(For example, prepare emergency foods, flashlight and so on.)
3.     When big earthquake occurred in the past, did you do any volunteer activity? If so, please let us know your experience in detail.
4.  According to the survey by government, Nankai Trough earthquake will occur about 80% within 30 years. To minimize the damage, what should we do from now on? Please share the idea with your group and make a presentation in front of everyone.

Sustainable eating

A variety of foods are imported to Japan and we could enjoy a vast range of world cuisines without going abroad.

However, some of the foods that are familiar with us place huge pressure on environmental resources in the course of production, transport, processing, and waste.

For example, if global consumption of meat and dairy would not slow down, one-quarter of world’s tropical land could disappear at the end of the century.

When compared in carbon footprints, breeding beef emits 4.5 times more carbon dioxides than pork.

Current food production system is at the turning point as it also contains problems such as exploitation, land pollution, and food inequality.

High demand for avocado not only accelerates illegal deforestation but also reduces the farmlands that could be used to supply general crops to feed the local people and requires high water consumption that leads to water shortage.

Sustainable eating is defined as ‘Sustainable diets are those diets with low environmental impacts which contribute to food and nutrition security and to healthy life for present and future generations.

Sustainable diets are protective and respectful of biodiversity and ecosystems, culturally acceptable, accessible, economically fair and affordable; nutritionally adequate, safe and healthy; while optimizing natural and human resources.’ (FAO 2010).

Please read through the references and think about your eating habits. Is there something you can change?

  1. Sustainable eating has become a universal goal as it is one of the key factors to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs). SDGs are comprised of 17 items. Please discuss with your group which item is related to sustainable eating? Maybe the answer is not only one.

  2. One solution that is proposed for sustainable food production is the introduction of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Though there are concerns for the environment and human health, GMOs indeed have the potential to feed the growing population around the globe. Currently, GMO plants are produced in many countries but are strictly controlled under the law. Japan is one of the countries that show strong hesitation towards GMOs. In order to create a better future, do/can you accept GMOs? Share your reasons with your group.

  3. So how can we make a sustainable choice in our daily lives? Imported foods use more fuel for transportation than foods produced near the place of consumption. Mass production in developing countries alters the local food production system. Could avoidance of buying imported foods make a change? Can you think of other solutions? Share your ideas with your group members and present one in the wrap-up. Note that sustainable eating should be considered from an environmental, social and economic perspective.
