Workshop

E’s club

【AGENDA】

Why are modern Japanese willing to be single or unmarried?

Any social problems occurred by this fact? Any solutions?

Please discuss the questions listed below.

1.Which do you prefer, being single or having a partner?

2.What are the merits and demerits of each choice(being single / having a partner)?

3.Why do you think more and more people are willing to choose to be single or unmarried?

This was not thinkable in the old days. What have made them change the value?

4.More people choosing to be single or marrying later are said to be one of the reasons of the falling birthrate in Japan.

If so, is there any solution?

5.Are there any other possible social problems except for the falling birthrate?

Are there any solutions for them?

6.What are the good influences on our society given by the fact that many people are choosing to be single or unmarried?

7.After all, in the long term, is it good or bad that more people are choosing to be single or unmarried?

[ Japan singletons hit record high ]

By Roland Buerk BBC News, Tokyo

Record numbers of young Japanese do not have boyfriends or girlfriends, and many do not want one, according to a survey by the country’s government.

Sixty-one percent of unmarried men aged 18 and 34 do not have a partner, nor do half of unmarried women the same age.

The numbers have increased since the previous survey in 2005.

Japan has one of the lowest birth rates in the world – and its population is on course to shrink dramatically by the middle of the century.

So every five years the government carries out a detailed survey of attitudes to sex and marriage.

The latest found that 61% of unmarried men aged 18 to 34 have no girlfriend, and half of women the same age have no boyfriend – a record high.

More than a quarter of the men and 23% of the women said they were not even looking.

Some cited a shortage of money, others a belief that it is impossible to find a good partner once they had passed the age of 25.

Many of the women also said single life suited them better than how they imagined marriage would be.

[ Over 70% of Single Women Happily Unmarried ]

JAPAN FOR SUSTAINABILITY / Posted: 2005/06/07 10:51:12 AM

Over 70 percent of single women in Japan are satisfied with their lives, according to a nationwide questionnaire survey on marriage that was conducted in February 2005 by Yomiuri Shimbun, one of Japan’s largest daily newspapers.

To the question, ‘Do you agree that women can spend their lives happily without getting married?’ 69 percent of unmarried respondents agreed. This exceeds the 50 percent of married people who answered yes to this question. Of single respondents, 73 percent women agreed, up 10 percentage points from the previous survey in 2003, and 67 percent of men agreed. Broken down by age bracket, 74 percent of respondents in their 20s, 66 percent in their 30s, and 58 percent in their 40s agreed that women can be happy without marrying.

To the question ‘Do you think that the increasing tendency to marry later in life is a major social concern?’ 58 percent of the respondents agreed, exceeding the 40 percent of respondents who disagreed. Multiple answers were allowed with respect to background factors bearing on late marriage; the top two reasons chosen by respondents were; ‘An increased number of women participate in society’ (67 percent), and ‘Fewer people place importance on the concept of marriageable age’ (52 percent).

These results show that single women tend to think positively about staying unmarried or marrying later. This is thought to be one of the factors behind a growing tendency to put off marriage. Many also think that this trend toward late marriage is contributing to the decline in the birthrate
